Quick and Dirty: Jim Thompson is a famous American figure in Thai history, and his beautiful home in Bangkok is now a museum open every day from 9am – 5pm. For lovers of history, art, and textiles, this is a must see.
I mentioned in a previous post that I am a lover of textiles. That being said, Jim Thompson’s House held a lot of interest for me.
Jim Thompson is an interesting figure in Thai history. He was an American architect who fell in love with Thailand during WWII and subsequently moved to Bangkok and began the Thai Silk Company, which raised thousands of Thailand’s poorest out of poverty and helped to reinvigorate the Thai silk industry. There’s a really bizarre part of Jim Thompson’s history, though. When he was 61, he disappeared during a visit to the Cameroon Highlands in Malaysia. He went for a walk and was never seen again, and to this day, nobody knows what happened to him.
His home on the river is amazing and has now been turned into a museum that hosts guided tours. As an architect, he had a great eye for design, and his home reflects this with its beautifully manicured gardens and ponds and architectural treasures from all over Southeast Asia housed in a cool, dark teakwood frame. The home was just so full of history and beauty — I was seriously in awe every time I turned a corner. Photos of the interior weren’t allowed, but the exterior grounds were still really beautiful. Overall, this was really one of my favorite sites we visited in Bangkok.
